Carbon Steel Plate Grades
Mild Steel Sheet & Plate
Mild steel sheet is manufactured from carbon steel with relatively low carbon content, making it more ductile, weldable, and machinable than steel with higher carbon content. This versatility makes mild steel sheets and plates ideal for construction and manufacturing applications that require further fabrication and forming processes. Mild steel sheet grade options include:
- ASTM A36: Features good workability, though it has lower strength than other grades. More affordable than other mild steel grades.
- ASTM A1011: Comparable to A36, this spec only applies to sheet (gauge) material
High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA)
High-strength low alloy plates are carbon plates with low
-range alloying elements added to get a desired property. This includes increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion or higher physical properties such as yield point and tensile strength. Examples of alloys that can be added in the steel
making process include copper, nickel, chrome etc. HSLA grades include:
- ASTM A572: Higher strength while maintaining good weldability. Commonly used in bridges and buildings.
- ASTM A588 or Corten: Also known as weathering steel, A588 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, resulting in its signature "red" rusted look. Even higher in strength, it is ideal for structural applications, though not as workable as the other mild steel grades.
Alloy Steel Plate Grades
Alloy steel plates are made from carbon steel with additional elements like chromium, molybdenum, and nickel. Adding these elements in various combinations results in specific performance characteristics, like increased strength or corrosion resistance. Alloy steel plate grade options include the 4000 series
, often referred to as Chromoly, for its chromium and molybdenum contents and constructional alloys such as A514, which utilizes heat treating to obtain its desired properties.
- 4130: Includes chromium and molybdenum and features good toughness and weldability.
- 4140: Similar to 4130 but features slightly higher carbon content for enhanced hardness and strength.
- 4340: Includes nickel, chromium, and molybdenum for even higher strength and fatigue resistance.
- A514: Uses heat treating to increase tensile and hardness. Comes in range of grades from A-H depending on the chemical composition and alloys used.
Additional Carbon Steel Sheet Grades
We also supply a wide range of high-performance carbon steel grades designed for specific industrial applications, including Pressure Vessel Quality grades, marine ship repair grades, and more. Additional grades include:
- Pressure Vessel Quality (PVQ): A516 GR.70, 387 GR.11
- Medium Carbon: 1045
- Abrasion Resisting: AR400, AR500
- Marine Ship Repair: AHDH, ABS GR.A
Carbon Steel Sheet & Plate Treatment Options
Hot Rolled CS Sheet/Plate
Hot rolled carbon steel plate involves forming carbon steel through elevated temperatures. While hot rolled carbon steel is more affordable due to less processing time, it does not have as precise tolerances as cold rolled carbon steel. It also has a rough, scaled surface compared to cold rolled carbon steel's smooth surface. Hot rolled carbon steel is a great option for applications that do not require a refined grain structure or tight tolerances.
Cold Rolled CS Sheet
Cold-rolled carbon steel sheet is produced by rolling hot-rolled steel through a series of rollers at cooler temperatures. The result is a carbon steel sheet with a more refined grain structure for a smoother surface and tighter tolerances. While more expensive than hot rolled carbon steel, cold rolled is ideal for applications requiring refined dimensions and a smooth surface finish.
Galvanized CS Sheet & Plate
Galvanized sheet and plate features a thick zinc coating that provides excellent corrosion resistance. Acting as a sacrificial layer, the zinc coating creates a barrier for the underlying steel, protecting it from rust and corrosion. Galvanized sheet and plate is used in many applications that require exposure to harsh elements, including construction materials, agricultural equipment, outdoor commercial signage, and more.
