Pressure Vessel Quality Plate (A-285, A-387, A-516)

A285 Grade C is an intermediate to low yield carbon steel. The primary uses for this metal are for vessels and boilers in the oil and gas industries. Due to its lower yield strength it is intended for boiler where moderate strength and good forming are required rather than in high pressurized vessels.  A 285 has a tensile strength of 55, to 75,000psi, yield strength of 30,000psi and an elongation of 27% in 2” and 23% minimum in 8”. Both forming and welding can be done on A285 Grade C using conventional methods. These plates are intended for fusion welded pressure vessels.

ASTM A387 GR11 is a chrome molybdenum alloy steel that is designed for specific use in pressure vessels and boilers operating at high temperatures. It is killed and thermally treated. With chromium and molybdenum as key alloying elements A387 has many characteristics of stainless steel but at lower costs. Because of the higher levels of chromium in the metal it has a higher level of oxidation and corrosion resistance. The Molybdenum increases resistance to oxidation and corrosion as well, and increases the tensile strength at high temperatures. It has tensile strength of 70,000 - 90,000 psi, yield strength of 43,000 psi and 22% elongation in 2”. It is used in a variety of industries where liquids and gases are stored at high temperatures like in the oil, gas and chemical industries.

ASTM A516 GR 70 is a pressure vessel grade steel. Intended for application at lower temperatures, it has excellent notch toughness as well as good weldability and cold working properties. It is used primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is important. The steel has a fine grain structure and is silicon killed. It has yield strength of 38,000 psi, tensile strength of 70,000 to 90,000 psi and elongation of 21% minimum in 2”. A516 GR 70 is commonly used in both pressure vessels and industrial boilers.
